As a trained trauma counselor, I offer EMDR therapy to help clients process and heal from trauma.
Whether big or small, I believe all trauma should be treated with utmost respect, compassion, and care. As a trauma counselor, I support my clients in exploring traumatic events in their lives as well as the lingering effects the experiences leave in the body. The EMDR approach I practice does not require talking in detail about the events in order to be effective. I have seen firsthand the positive outcomes of attentively and carefully supporting clients as they work through past traumas, and it is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.
EMDR therapy refers to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy. It’s an interactive therapy modality that seeks to relieve psychological stress experienced when traumatic memories come back up. It was first developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but can help with re-experiencing traumatic memories more generally as well.
An EMDR-trained trauma counselor will guide the client through a series of bilateral eye movements (moving the eyes side-to-side) while the client recalls small portions of a traumatic or triggering experience simultaneously. Focusing on the eye movements and encountering the difficult experience in small doses enables the brain to not be as overcome by the memory or trigger, ultimately reducing the effects of the trauma.
